Good afternoon, heading in from a private friends and family charter 3/4 day. We had picture-perfect weather at Santa Rosa Island. We primarily fished in shallow water we had a lot of current and a lot of first-timers but everything worked out very well. We had a good mix of rockfish and really nice Whitefish. Our sister Boat the Coral Sea called us into some game fish at the very end of the day we were able to get a few boiling around the boat, but the fish were reluctant to eat anything with a hook in it. We gave it our last hour in hopes of catching a few more bottom fish while on the anchor. Our 25 anglers caught: 105 rockfish, 155 whitefish, 12 lingcod, and 1 sheephead.

We are 1/2 day fishing Monday-Wednesday, lots of room, Bass are biting so are the Rockfish.

Today we stayed on the coast. We are headed back with limits in the bags a bit early today. Fishing started slow out in 240 to 300 feet of water except for half banded and other pigmy species, (which were suicidal). I finally gave up and moved in shallow to one of those tiny rocks so rare along the coast. It was one-stop shopping for full limits -- olives, big browns, yellowtail rf, lots of steamer reds, a few short lings and at least one keeper.  Weather was hot and glassy all day. We'll be in about 3pm today. Final catch for 17 anglers is: 170 rockfish, 1 big rock sole (halibut grade), 1 sandadab, and 1 ling.

We still have room for Sundays 3/4 day trip, as well as our 1/2 day trips Monday through Wednesday next week.

Capt Merit: Trying this again folks, first post did not take it seems. Today the island report at departure was 4 knots and the weather model forecast decent conditions at the island, so that's where we pointed. However, we arrived to very sloppy conditions and lots of wind, so we went and fished in the lee of Fornies, finding lots of fish in the shallows up off the rocks. Fishing in very shallow water and calm conditions, those fish were picky biters. The folks who fished them like calicos did great on jumbo olive rockfish. But the regular gear only picked and scratched at the sheephead and whitefish and other rockfish, despite being able to see the fish in the water around the lines at times. After several stops with similar results I decided to take us back around the west end and into the coves on the other side. Our move around the west end was an adventure, to say the least -- very bumpy. On the north side we found more calm water and It was beautiful alongside those majestic cliffs. However, fishing was still pretty scratchy and it was a good thing most of what we did catch was very nice grade -- mostly burly whitefish and sheephead, even a ling. But numbers were scarce, and once again the same few select anglers seemed to be having most of the luck. For our efforts, we enjoyed some spectacular places right next to the island and caught 88 rockfish, 22 sheephead, 44 ocean whitefish, a lingcod and a fat rainbow perch -- our exotic for the day. Needless to say, we should have run up the coast instead, where there was calm conditions and hungrier fish. It's great to have that area up there to fish when the winds are blowing at the islands.

Capt Merit is running the 3/4 day trip tomorrow. You can just show up, boat leaves at 7am. Still room for Sunday.
